We are seeking "Mentors by Mail" for each of our 59 children. (We have already organized mentors for 30 of the children!)
A mentor contributes $365 a year to provide for the basic needs of one child. In return, the mentor will receive a photo and a short biography, and will be encouraged to stay in touch with his or her child over the course of a year (and hopefully longer). In return, the child will respond in letters describing his or her experiences at the home and at school.
For more information about our mentoring program, contact Larry Hohler at hohlerlj@aol.com. Please look below for specific children in search of mentors. |

Martin Needs A Mentor - MENTOR FOUND 08.23.07

Martin Kimathi |
Martin Kimathi was born in 1996, the youngest of four children. When his mother died, his father abandoned the family, and the children were left with their aging grandfather. Martin was brought to us when the municipal social worker visited his home and found him weak and covered with sores. He had not been able to attend school because of his sickly condition, and had been supporting himself by begging at a nearby market. He was enrolled in Standard 1 (first grade) shortly after being admitted to our home. At the end of three months, his class ranking was 9 out of 50. His dream is to become a teacher. For the first time in his life, Martin feels loved and cared for - equal with other children in and outside of the home. His greatest fear is that he will succumb to sickness. He worries about what will happen to his siblings, who are still on the streets. |
